Why Do Holiko´s Products Not Contain Mineral Oils?
Many people with skin problems who are currently testing our Colostrum Hydrofluid have shared that they often use products containing mineral oil (e.g., Paraffinum Liquidum, Paraffin, Microcristallina Wax, Ceresin/Cera Microcristallina, Mineral Oil, Ozokerite, or Petrolatum) for skin care.
The Function of Mineral Oils in Cosmetics
Mineral oil forms a non-irritating base for many cosmetic products and is generally well tolerated. It creates a film on the skin that prevents moisture loss, causing the epidermal cells to swell. This film makes the skin surface appear plumper and smoother, with small wrinkles diminishing. Barrier-damaged and dry skin temporarily feels hydrated and well-cared-for.
However, mineral oil has significant disadvantages. By forming a film on the skin, it prevents the skin from receiving regulatory stimuli from the outside. This suppresses the production of the skin’s own water-binding substances and natural fats. Unlike vegetable oils and butters, which closely resemble the skin’s own fats, mineral oils do not provide physiological components that can integrate into the skin barrier. Under the mineral oil film, the skin becomes prone to dryness, while the outside gives the illusion of a healthy, intact surface.
How Our Natural Cosmetics Work
Our cosmetics follow a completely different care concept and consistently avoid mineral oils. Instead, we use natural vegetable oils, which are concentrated with cosmetic ingredients. Skin enzymes break down these oils, allowing the skin to incorporate them into its structures. This promotes the regeneration of the skin’s barrier layer, enabling it to better protect itself from external influences.
Transitioning to Natural Cosmetics
Switching from mineral oil-based products to natural cosmetics can cause temporary skin changes. If you’ve been using mineral oil products, your skin may initially feel “restless,” drier, or show small impurities in the first few weeks. This reaction occurs because the skin is adjusting to the absence of the mineral oil film and learning to regulate its own moisture and rebuild its natural barrier.
The long-term result of switching to natural cosmetics is skin that normalizes and maintains its health independently.
We believe this is a goal worth pursuing!
